India is secular country having people from different religions. Religions in India include Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Sikh and Buddhist. Hindus constitute the majority of population.  .

Pongal, Holi, Vinayaka Chavithi, Dussera, Diwali and Ugadi are the major festivals for Hindus in india For Vinayaka chavithi , Hindu devotees prepare idol of lord vinayaka and offer pooja. Hindus offer pooja for nine days and immerse the idol in water.  Dussera is celebrated as festival of Victory over evil.   Diwali or Deepavali is celebrated as a festival of light.  Holi is celebrated as festival of Colors.  Pongal is celebrated after the completion of harvest of crops by farmers. Pongal is celebrated mostly in south India.  Ugadi is a New Year day and is celebrated regionally on different days in different states.

Holi Celebrations

Bakrid and Ramzan are the main festivals for Muslims in India. Christmas is the main festival for Christians in India. For Ramzan Muslims will be on fast during day time for one month. They eat before sun rise or after sun set.  Muslims offer an animal as sacrifice to the god on the day of Bakrid.  Christians celebrate Christmas on 25th December. Christians offer prayers to Jesus Christ on the Christmas day.

Pongal is a festival of Harvest

Indians wear new clothes on festival day. Indians make donations to the poor during festive days. Indians exchange festive greetings among friends and relatives on festive days.
