Ganesh is main god for Hindus. Pooja is performed by Hindus for Ganesh before starting any pooja to other gods. Even new work will not be initiated without Ganesh Pooja. Ganesh Chavithi is one of the main festivals for Hindu devotees both in south India and north India. In kolkatta, Mumbai and Hyderabad the event is organised well.

When is Ganesh Chavithi Festival celebrated in 2016?

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated in the chavithi ( Fourth day) of sukla paksha ( waning moon) of Bhadrapada month of Hindu calendar. This year in 2016 this festival for lord Ganesh is celebrated on 5th of September 2016. This festival lasts for nine days and in the end the idols of lord Ganesh are immersed in water.

How is Ganesh Chaturthi Festival celebrated in India?

Pooja is performed for lord Ganesh with fruits, leaves, vegetables and flowers. Sweets are distributed after completion of Puja. Usually the Pooja is performed for about nine days every day in the evening.  On the last day lord Ganesh is taken in procession and get immersed in water usually in the lakes, rivers and tanks that are nearby.

As colors are added to the idol, it is causing pollution to the water and environment. Now people became conscious about environment and are using idols made of mud clay. Now devotees are using natural colors for the decoration of idols. Environmentalists are campaigning for using green ganesh for this festival.
