Maha Shivaratri is one of the famous festivals for Hindus. Maha Shivaratri means the great night of Shiva. There is no fixed for Shivaratri as per Gregorian calendar. This year in 2012 Maha Shivaratri falls on the 20th day of February 2012. This festival is dedicated to lord Shiva.
Maha Sivaratri 2012 celebrations:
Devotees wake up early in the morning and take bath. Then they go the nearest Shiva temple. Hindu Devotees offer Puja to lord Shiva. Devotees visit Shiva temples and offer abhishekams to the Shiva lingam. Devotees observe fast and they remain wake up the whole
night on Shivaratri. Devotees take fruits and milk on this day with out having any meal for the day. Some even remain fast for the whole day and night with out even drinking water. Jaagaran (night long vigil) is observed by some devotees of lord Shiva on Maha Shivaratri day. Devotees chant “Om Namah Shivaya” on this Shivaratri day and night.
Significance of Shivaratri:
According to some legend Shivaratri is the wedding day of lord Shiva with parvathi. Some legends depict that it is on Shivaratri day that Shiva has performed Tandava. Some also say that Shiva has become Linga on this day of Shivaratri.
