Vinayaka Chavithi is celebrated on the Chaturthi day (Fourth day) of shukla paksha (waxing Moon) in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada. This usually falls in September. This year in 2012 Ganesh Chaturthi falls on the 19th day of September.

Though Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated acrossIndia, It is
prominently celebrated in the states ofMaharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamilnadu. Idols of lord Ganesh are prepared nearly six months prior to Ganesh Chaturthi. On then day of Ganesh Chaturthi devotees bring idols of Lord Ganesh are brought and are
decorated with flowers and leaves. Puja is performed with flowers to lord Ganesh. Prasadam is distributed after completion of puja. The festival event last for nearly nine days. Some cultural events are organized and are performed near the stages/ platforms of Lord Ganesh idol in villages as well as colonies in the cities. Children wait for then whole year for the Ganesh festival to come.Holidayis observed on then day of Vinayaka Chavithi. After completion of Nine days the idols are immersed in water.
